Claude Moshe Kemoun
Claude Moshé Kemoun is a French-Israeli contemporary artist, born in France in 1980 into a secular Jewish family.
I grew up surrounded by popular culture, regardless of the medium. From an early age, I was fascinated by French, American, and Japanese comics.
These influences continue to shape the way I create and the visual language I use in my work.
My work explores a wide range of subjects, including faith, relationships, society, and my own emotions.
At times, I may choose to be politically incorrect, but I always try to incorporate humor into my work. I also strive to make Orthodox Judaism accessible to everyone and to challenge the common perception that practicing Jews cannot engage with conceptual art.
I primarily work with oil paint, while also using stencils and spray paint.
Once my ideas reach the canvas, I seek to find a balance between aesthetics and subject matter — never by chance. The setting and composition of each painting also play an important role in the story I want to tell.
I try to remain sensitive to the time in which I live, because I believe this is part of the role of a contemporary artist.
I approach the changes taking place in the world through a Jewish religious perspective. Inspired by both the oral and written texts of Judaism, I strive to give my paintings multiple layers of interpretation, because I believe this is what gives an artwork its richness.
I also use heroes from popular culture to express both my successes and failures, as well as the challenges we encounter throughout life.
By bringing these characters into my art, I find a way to reflect experiences that are universal. Pop culture heroes become powerful symbols that enrich and inform my creative practice.
By combining my sensitivity to the present with my Jewish religious perspective, I seek to make my own artistic contribution and offer a unique way of looking at the world around us.
My goal is to stimulate reflection, evoke emotion, and encourage viewers to interpret my works in different ways.
It is in this diversity of interpretations that I believe the true richness of my artistic practice lies.
